Why Choose Gold's School of Motoring
I have always believed that whilst I teach my learners to pass their driving test, more importantly, it is my role to teach safe driving for life.
I have worked with male and female learners of all ages, with varying levels of ability, experience and confidence and have supported them in progressing their skills, knowledge and understanding, as swiftly as is safely possible.
It has always been important to me that my learners play a full role during their lessons, as learning can only take place when it is a two way process.
This means, that whilst I will provide you with the tuition and feedback necessary for you to become a safe and confident driver, along with the physical elements of driving, a fundamental part of your lessons will be our engaging in question and answer techniques. This will allow me to assess your understanding and progress, but as importantly, will give you the opportunity to comment on your understanding and progress, which is vital in our moving forward efficiently on your learning journey.

First Lesson
Your first lesson content will depend on your level of ability, experience and confidence. Below is a summary of a typical first lesson for a learner with no previous driving experience;
-
Eyesight test and checking of provisional licence.
-
Initial Q&A – I always ensure that I find out whether you have any previous driving experience, which enables me to tailor the level of my instruction to meet your personal needs.
-
Drive to suitable learning location – Depending on where you live, I will drive you to a quieter area free from heavy traffic and complex junctions. During this I will talk through some of the key aspects of driving, such as changing gear, using mirrors and the indicators.
-
Setting up the car and controls – We will walk through the set-up of the car, such as the positioning of the seat and wheel, before moving onto the brake, clutch and accelerator. Then you will learn and practise how the clutch works.
-
Moving off and stopping – Once comfortable with the clutch, initially you will practice moving off and stopping safely in first gear. When you are proficient in doing this, you will progress onto using second gear and will also begin to negotiate left hand turns.
-
Debrief and drive back – As this is your first lesson, in the interests of safety, I will drive you home and will use this time to ask you how you felt the lesson went and to provide you with feedback.
-
Booking your next lesson – Once home, all that is left is to book your next lesson, which can be written on the booking card that I provide.
FAQs
What do I need to do before I can have my first lesson?
Before you can start learning to drive, you will need to be at least 17 and have applied for a provisional licence.
You can apply for your provisional licence either online or at the post office and up to 3 months before your 17th birthday. Please note you cannot take your first lesson until you are in possession of your provisional licence.
Do I need to pass my theory test before I start driving?
Absolutely not, I actually recommend that you start your driving lessons before you take the theory test, as some practical experience will help you understand the theory and hazard perception element of learning to drive. However, I would advise that you begin studying for your theory test as this will support your practical learning. It is important that any literature used to do this is up to date.
Please note that you will need to have passed your theory test before you can apply for your practical driving test.
How long are your lessons?
A single lesson is 50 minutes and a double lesson is 1 hour and 50 minutes.
Is the car manual or automatic?
It is a manual car
How many lessons will I need to pass my practical driving test?
There is no set amount of lessons that you need to take and my aim is to have you test ready as quickly as possible. However, everyone learns at their own pace, so how many lessons it takes you to reach this standard, will be determined by how quickly you learn to deal with modern driving conditions safely and confidently.
Is your service door to door?
Yes I can pick you up from your home, school, college or work, anywhere that is within my catchment area.
I am still feeling nervous, is that normal?
It is completely normal to be nervous before your first lesson. I have a friendly, patient and understanding teaching style and will help build your confidence, developing your driving skills at a pace that you are comfortable with.
To help with this, we will start on quiet nursery routes, with lots of space and little traffic. Then as your confidence and ability grows, I will progress you to intermediate routes and finally to advance routes.
